Willful Ignorance and the End of American Democracy

donald-trump-1

So in my last post we had a relatively boring discussion on the different branches of the US government and their functions. Now it’s time to discuss why they no longer work and what We the People need to do to fix it. And for that to happen We the People have to start paying attention. We have to hold our public servants and the Fourth Estate (news media, which will be getting it’s own post) accountable and actually get off our asses and vote.

As I mentioned previously, a majority of Americans don’t know how our government works, and worse, have no desire to learn.

Plus, during presidential elections only about 60% of Americans eligible to vote get off their lazy asses and cast ballots, and that 60% drops to around 40% during the mid-terms. This complacency has a polarizing influence, allowing a minority of highly partisan voters to elect equally partisan candidates with extreme positions.

As a result, instead of electing moderate politicians willing to work in the nation’s best interest, we’re stuck with a bunch of entitled ideologues. They take extreme positions that the majority of We the People disagree with, and refuse to legislate if they don’t get 100% their way.

When Congress Doesn't Get Their Way

These unethical dill-holes have even gone so far as to intentionally sabotage the president’s ability to function. But what’s really criminal:

WHEN THEY PUBLICLY STATED THIS WAS THEIR INTENT, We the People DID NOTHING.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) famously said, “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”

Vice President Joe Biden told Michael Grunwald, the author of “The New New Deal” that “seven different Republican Senators” told him “McConnell had demanded unified resistance.” after the 2008 election

“The way it was characterized to me was: `For the next two years, we can’t let you succeed in anything. That’s our ticket to coming back,’ ” Biden says.

Republican Georgia Senator David Perdue  speaking to a group of evangelicals:

“I think we are called to pray. I think we are called to pray for our country, our leaders and, yes, even Barack Obama. But I think we should be very specific about how we pray we should pray like Psalms 108:9 says. ‘It says ‘May his days be few; and let another have his office…’”

This quote is particularly ugly considering the audience. They’re well aware of what he didn’t say.  The rest of the passage is as follows:

Let his days be few; and let another take his office.
Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.
Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.
Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labor.
Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favor his fatherless children.
Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.
Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.
Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

What happened to love thy neighbor as thy self (Mark 12:31) or love your enemies, do good to them (Luke 6:35) or Above all, love each other, because love covers a multitude of sins (Peter 4:)  and many other similar biblical admonishments? He may have been speaking to a room full of self professed evangelicals, but judging by their titters, not a one of them is truly Christian. That’s right, I’m judging all you video dickwads.  I don’t claim to be Christian.  So—unlike you—I never agreed to that ‘judge not’ shit, but hey, I’ll still give praying for you worthless fucks my best shot:

‘And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ’… Amen

Also:

Sorry, I really wanted to take the high road, but hypocritical ass-munching shit stains tend to bring out the bitch in me.

Now where was I…

This partisan ugliness went beyond words to actual sabotage. Not only did Congress take the unprecedented step of refusing to acknowledge the president’s budget proposals, or hold annual hearings with economic advisors on the state of our nation’s economy, they refused to pass our nation’s budget before the annual deadline. Publicly stating they intended to shut down the government then throw the nation into crisis… numerous times.

And We the People  didn’t just remained silent, we allowed these douche-nozzles to be re-elected.

The legislature also intentionally usurped the executive branch’s constitutional right to make appointments by refusing to even discuss, much less confirm many of the president’s appointees,  forcing hundreds of top-level positions in federal agencies to go unfilled.

“The awful lapse on the Supreme Court nomination was part of a larger outrage, the failure to confirm a much larger number of nominees to both judicial and executive branch posts, a record for this Congress far more dismal than its comparable predecessors….The gaps on the executive side, which include key ambassadorships in critical countries and important posts in national security and homeland security, among others, are still overshadowed on the judicial side. There has been a huge spike in “judicial emergencies,” which are formally designated by the courts when unconscionable delays in justice are caused by heavy workloads produced via court vacancies.” The Atlantic

And if Republican Senator Ted Cruz has his way,

(sorry but that’s just too fucking funny not to share…)

…the Supreme Court vacancy will remain vacant indefinitely or at least until someone he finds agreeable is in a position to make appointments. Telling reporters after a speech in Colorado ( The Washington Post,)

“You know, I think there will be plenty of time for debate on that issue. There is certainly long historical precedent for a Supreme Court with fewer justices. I would note, just recently, that Justice (Stephen) Breyer observed that the vacancy is not impacting the ability of the court to do its job. That’s a debate that we are going to have.”

(It should be noted, according to Justice Breyer, Cruz took his remarks out of context. He was referring to uncontroversial cases where the justices could reach unanimous consensus. And it should also be noted, when the court is evenly split, there is no decision and the contested law automatically stands. We have an odd number of justices to prevent this. )

So here we are… And the only way We the People are going to get the government we both need and deserve is to stop being a bunch of don’t-give-a-shit ignoramuses, and start being responsible citizens. Otherwise, we’ll keep electing the same asshats—and if you think by not voting you didn’t elect them then think again. BY NOT VOTING YOU ALLOWED THEM TO BE ELECTED—who have repeatedly worked against We the People‘s best interests; harming our economy, making our country less secure and not taking care of the business We the People are paying them to do.

So how do We the People take back our democracy?

Coming soon…We the People need accountability!

Taking back the Fourth Estate.

This was such a good post.

I don’t know what the best solution is as far as getting more people to vote, but there is definitely a problem with that.

I’ve read that voting is mandatory in some places like Australia. What do you think of that solution?

    1. I think a good solution is education. Make US Government and Civics a required course senior year of high school with automatic voter registration upon completion. Even if folks choose not to vote, at least they will understand how our government is supposed to work.

I agree with you there. Education is so important.
